Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History

Visit where art and history meet in the small central Virginia city called Danville. Guests can browse three fine art galleries, historic period decorate arts, and three Civil War exhibits, as well as, the Sutherlin Mansion. Housed in the 1859 Italian Villa Mansion home of Major William Sutherlin, the Museum is most popularly known as the "Last Capitol of the Confederacy". Jefferson Davis resided here during the final week of the Civil War after evacuating Richmond. The Museum exhibits the desk on which Davis wrote the last Proclamation to the Confederacy. While in Danville, President Davis and his cabinet received word that Lee had surrendered at nearby Appomattox. The museum offers tours (docent or audio)of the historic home (fee), a video about the Mansion's role in the Civil, and a Museum Gift Shop. Make this the start of your tour of Danville's Historic District! The Museum is closed on Mondays.
